The 2010 Martin Ennals Award, the Nobel prize of the human rights world, is to be won by Muhannad Al-Hassani, a Syrian lawyer.
While Al-Hassani is unlikely to make the presentation in October - he is currently subject to a travel ban and is incarcerated in Adra prison - the award has led Nathaniel Daudrich to explore the growing trend of human rights abuses in Syria, particularly in the sphere of freedom of expression. |
Media 4 Heroes, a human rights conference in The Hague (Netherlands), overcame the chaos of the Icelandic ash cloud by using the very new media it had convened to discuss.
More importantly, reports Nathaniel Daudrich from the Zeebelt theatre, retired senior United Nations personnel and leading Dutch politicians are stressing the importance of new media as a means of documenting abuses and protecting human rights. |
